Performing Arts
The performing arts are at the core of our very nature and deeply embedded in our society. It is for this reason that the performing arts program at Mentone Grammar brings such inspiration, energy and dedication to education at our School.
We are immensely proud of the high standard of tuition on offer that results in a calendar filled with joyous stage performances that showcase the passion and talents of our community. Our program enables students to experience a dynamic array of performing arts opportunities that provides for diversity of interests, styles and skill levels.
Talented, inspirational and highly skilled staff facilitate an engaging and innovative list of classes all aimed at preparing our learners for high quality performances and a lifelong passion for the arts. A successful key feature of our program is the integration of music, dance and drama through classroom activities, co-curricular programs and within private tuition sessions.
A World of Opportunities
Our popular introductory classroom programs for junior students provide joyous entry-level tuition at key points in a learner’s journey. Once on this journey, our performers’ opportunities are both diverse and many as they progress through the Middle and Senior Years, ranging from musical theatre and classical theatre, opera through to contemporary works and much more. Showcase performances such as the Senior Musical (Mamma Mia! in 2022), Junior Musical (The Little Mermaid in 2022), Bayview Play (The Final Frontier in 2022), Cre8tive Dance, Opera (L’enfant et les Sortilege in 2022), Riviera Play (The Haunted House on Penny Lane Way in 2022), drama performances and musicals all provide well-staged performance opportunities for our emerging musicians, singers, dancers and actors.
Amadeus Opera Company
Our Amadeus Opera Company is unique to Mentone Grammar offering a pioneering program within the Australian and wider operatic field.
Students involved in voice lessons can audition for the company, and begin their two-year training in vocal technique, sight-reading, and performance skills. Throughout the year, singers also work closely with the Mentone Grammar Orchestra to master the complex repertoire and form a deep appreciation for this genre.
Creative Hub
Mentone Grammar has an enviable reputation in the performing arts, with the School’s stunning Creativity Centre being a hub for creative passion and offering extraordinary resources to enable the best in music performance, dance, drama and theatre. The beautiful acoustics of the Thorold Theatre is perfect for small orchestral ensembles through to high-end musical productions. With many and varied stage productions, opportunities also exist for students to develop their skills as stage crew, sound and lighting technicians, costume and make-up artists and choreography assistants.
Performing arts has always been an integral part of the way we examine and interpret our world and our experience of it. It is because of this unquenchable urge to make sense of our world that we continue to develop new innovative and exciting ways of telling the story that must be told!
