Mentone Stories | IWD 2025

On Thursday 6 March 2025, we were thrilled to launch our 2025 Mentone Stories series with a powerful focus on International Women’s Day (IWD) – a time to unite, reflect, and take meaningful action. This year’s theme, #AccelerateAction, calls on all of us to champion progress toward gender equity and empower the next generation of leaders.

Empowering change is particularly relevant as we celebrate IWD and reflect on the power of education in shaping a more equitable world. Education – especially literacy – has long been a catalyst for progress, breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for all.

A prime example of someone who has been breaking down barriers is Fiori Giovanni, who we were honoured to welcome as our guest speaker at this special IWD community event, proudly supported by Mentone Grammar Parents & Friends and The Mentonians Association.

At just 12, Fiori’s marriage was arranged, and by 14, she was recruited into the Eritrean army and trained to fight, shoot, and kill. Determined to create a different future, she escaped alone at just 15 and embarked on a remarkable journey across five continents, ultimately finding success in Australia. Her message of hope, courage, leadership, and the power of positive action resonated deeply with our community.

We sincerely thank Fiori for sharing her story with us and for all of those who attended this memorable event. Together, let’s continue to advocate for gender equity and empower future leaders.
