  • Thought Leadership: Hearing augmentation in classrooms

Transforming learning through hearing accessibility

The recent installation of hearing augmentation systems in classrooms across our School signifies a monumental leap towards creating an inclusive and improved learning environment for all students.

These innovative systems, featuring wall-mounted or ceiling-installed speakers and pendant-style microphones, ensure that every word spoken by teachers is amplified and clear. This technology not only benefits students with hearing impairments, but also aids those who may find it challenging to concentrate in a traditional classroom setting.

By facilitating improved auditory access, the hearing augmentation systems help bridge communication gaps, fostering a more engaging and participatory classroom atmosphere. Students can hear instructions and discussions clearly, which enhances their ability to focus and actively participate in their learning. Furthermore, these systems allow for a more comfortable acoustic environment, enabling teachers to communicate at a natural volume without straining their voices. This reduction in vocal strain helps maintain teacher wellbeing and promotes a positive learning atmosphere.

The impact of these systems extends beyond improved hearing; they also promote inclusivity and accessibility in education. Parents have already begun to notice the positive effects, including those of a child with hearing difficulties who shared their experience: “We are very thankful for the new audio system in Mentone Grammar’s ELC classrooms. Our daughter has mild underlying hearing issues, and we were so excited when she came home on the first day saying she could hear the teacher easier than before. We have also had feedback that her confidence has improved in the classroom, and we are seeing this at home with her learning.”

Additionally, one of our ELC teachers who uses a hearing aid has emphasised the significant advantages of the hearing augmentation system, particularly in amplifying her voice clearly. She remarked that this technology empowers her to deliver lessons with confidence, allowing all students to engage actively in classroom discussions, even amidst the naturally busy and noisy environment of an ELC lesson!

Many of our other teachers have also witnessed a transformation in classroom dynamics, with students feeling more included and capable of contributing to discussions. The commitment to enhancing auditory access reflects a broader understanding of the diverse needs of students in today’s educational landscape.

With our current trajectory, Mentone Grammar is dedicated to equipping every classroom with these systems by the end of 2026, ensuring that every student has the tools they need to thrive.
