Mentone Grammar’s 2021 Head Prefect, Harrison Huber, has been awarded a Vice Chancellor’s Elite Scholarship at Bond University for 2022.

Congratulations to our 2021 Head Prefect, Harrison Huber, who has been awarded a Vice Chancellor’s Elite Scholarship at Bond University. This prestigious scholarship is awarded to students who have showcased exceptional academic achievement, proven leadership ability and personal character. In 2022, Harrison will commence a double degree in Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws. Mentone Grammar is extremely proud of Harrison’s achievement, and we wish him the best of luck in his future studies.

We sat down with Harrison to discuss how his journey at Mentone Grammar enabled him to follow his passions:

What are your plans for the future?

I am thrilled to have been offered a Vice Chancellor’s Elite Scholarship at Bond University. This year, I will be commencing a double degree in Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws.

I chose this course because studying the law has always interested me, especially corporate law. I added the commerce degree because I know it will help me in this pathway and because I enjoy working with numbers.

How would you describe your VCE experience?

My VCE experience was – excuse the cliché – a roller coaster. It had its ups and downs in the aspect of studying and motivation, where some days I found myself completing several hours of work and some days I lacked any motivation to even look at a book. Adding a global pandemic to the mix made the two years of VCE quite an interesting ride.

All-in-all, the only parts of my experience I remember are the good parts because there were so many of them. Positive times like the social events, the moments of laughter in the study centre, and the support given by the Mentone Grammar staff are always going to stay with me.

How has your journey at Mentone Grammar enabled you to get into your chosen pathway?

I was fortunate enough to be elected Mentone Grammar’s Head Prefect in 2021. This leadership position taught me how to be a strong communicator and a good leader.

I was taught how to tackle a problem and solve it with deep thought and consideration. Every problem has a solution, but good leadership is about finding a solution that provides the best outcomes for the majority of people. This role taught me the importance of listening to everyone’s story and giving people a voice. Being a good leader does not necessarily mean being loud, but rather inspiring your peers.

The role required time management skills and communication skills, which I believe I will take into my further studies and career.

The newfound communication and leadership skills that I developed in this role, along with the strong academic culture, set me up to succeed in my endeavours.

Was there anyone that particularly helped you along the way?

Frankly, it would be impossible to pin the support system down to a single person or a single group of people. Every individual at Mentone Grammar – ranging from the staff, teachers, coaches, peers and my family – pushed me to wake up every day as a better version of myself. I am thankful for this wonderful community for supporting me.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

Honestly, a real bonus of attending Bond University is living on the sunny Gold Coast. I am not going to lie, I am really looking forward to Queensland’s year-round warm weather!

Additionally, I am eager to develop my career path towards becoming a Corporate Lawyer and reach my peak performance as an athlete.
