Bravo to students and staff for an amazing production of Sweeney Todd. The musical thriller invoking the Demon Barber of Fleet Street showcased the simply stunning acting, singing, music and dancing talents of students in Years 9-12.
"It was always going to be a challenge," said Director, Ms Louise Daly. And our students truly pulled it off! Sweeney Todd, with its dichotic storyline, engimatic characters and sweeping discordant musicality, takes the audience and performer on a dark and different journey. Sweeney Todd is an opera in all its glory - it does not apologise or dance around the major issues of love, revenge, grief, opportunity all at someone else's expense. "Mentone Grammar students have come of age with this thought-provoking and musically challenging production. The strength and breadth of talent that has emerged is amazing."
"The Company has worked tirelessly and with absolute comittment to the process and I am extremely proud of everyone's efforts."
Principal, Mal Cater said, "Thanks to all who attended and supported colleagues and students. Thanks to the staff involved in the Production for another outstanding performance. The quality of cast, crew and musicians was of a very high standard and l congratulate and commend the staff associated with mentoring these students to this level. Louise Daly continues to take our drama program to this high level and our thanks and praise should be abundant for this. Bravo to all involved."
Held at The Drum Theatre, Dandenong - a first for Mentone Grammar at this professional venue - our performers were surrounded by fantastic sets, wore colourful and lively costumes, and were supported by a large, perfectly timed orchestra of students, staff and community members in the music pit lead by Musical Director Mr Anthony Bingham. Director and Choreography Assistants were all students. The technical and back stage crew of students and staff on sets, props, makeup, lighting and sound completed the outstanding performance. The front of house was supported by student leaders and coordinated by Artissimo.
