Jimmy Miller with Victoria Police Members under the shadow of the Blue Ribbon Day flag

Blue Ribbon Day a tremendous tribute

Published: Friday, 14 September 2012

Thanks to the Bayview Middle School and the general Mentone Grammar Community this year's Blue Ribbon Day was another great success. Organised by Year 8 student, Jimmy Miller, and his classmates and teacher Mr Peter O'Gorman, the day had it all - including a visit by the Police Helicopter and 'Celebrity' Police Officer Shane Haw, winner of The Amazing Race reality TV show.

But the importance and symbolism of the day was not forgotten amidst the excitement as Blue Ribbon Day is a day to remember police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty - Jimmy Miller's Dad being one of them.

In addition, several police members from the Moorabbin proactive policing unit, highway patrol and forensic unit attended to show their support. Year 8 students were fortunate to attend a session with a Youth Police Officer about safety, particularly cyber safety, and Year 5-6 students had the chance to see hands on how forensic police investigate crimes.

A raffle and sausage sizzle was held to raise funds for the Blue Ribbon Foundation. "We managed to raise $1846.40 – considering everything we sold was either $1 or $2, this is a tremendous achievement," said Mr O'Gorman.

The official Blue Ribbon Day will be held on 29 September. For more info visit their website.
